Evaluation Q7) looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
Evaluation Q7) looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
Upon the first time of my group being given the cameras, we had been set a preliminary task in order to test our physical abilities on the camera and to put our knowledge to the test. Our main aim of the preliminary task was to put to practice the use of various camera shots and angles as we had to make a 30 second video of a convocation between two people.
Having now used the cameras and the editing software more often, I am now used to filming in different camera angles such as the 180 ° angle to capture the viewer's attention of the two characters engaging in conversation. This is useful because it allows our viewers to see who is talking and make sense of the conversation taking place. The shot taken however was not as good as it could have been as there is unwanted space above the characters head, which could have been cropped out as this extra space withdrawing the amount of attention on our characters that we initially wanted.
We also used techniques such as the straight cut. This is an easy and basic transition between shots when you simply place the first clip onto the timeline, cut the clip down to as long as you prefer it to play and the you place the next clip right next to the first clip, leaving no gap in between. After this it will play off as one individual clip. The transitions between the shots was also rough as during the stages of editing. Making the straight cuts seem off queue in terms of timing. this isn't good for the audience because if time is wasted in between cuts then this tends to lose the attention of the audience if there are massive pauses between cuts, as they are waiting for the next camera shot.
However in the final product I began to perfect various edits and transitions to merge clips together as well as perfecting the straight cut. This was beneficial for the sake of the movie as we managed to trim down the timings of the clips and only kept every second that was relevant to the film. Which saves as much time as possible considering the film is 2 minutes long.
Another skill that I have learnt during my time of editing the clips is how to merge two clips together and to make them overlap so they play at the same time in the same frame by overlaying the two frames together. This is good because it forces the viewers to focus on what is happening in the clip as there is more than one clip playing at the time.
Comparison of shots
The usage of camera angles in both shots are good, however in the preliminary task their is a lot of the background being shown which diverts attention from the characters and what is happening in the shot. In the final product however this is all cut out and only what is necessary is presented in the frame.
In these two scenes we review the sharpness and focus of each shot as in the preliminary task their is a low sharpness which makes the image in the frame look slightly blunt, if this isn't an actual affect necessary to the scene then this makes it hard for the viewers to clearly see what's going on which can also affect their understanding in each scene. But in the final film we see a high focus which can show clearly key iconography and objectification relevant to the scenes.
Evaluation Q5) How did you attract / address your target audience?
Evaluation Question 5) How did you attract / address your target audience?
Secondary Research:
"Secondary research - involves the summary, collation and/or synthesis of existing research rather than primary research, where data is collected from, for example, research subjects or experiments."
We used our secondary research into existing thriller openings to get a better and concentrated idea on of who we wanted to make our target audience from understanding who the thriller target audience actually is. So we decided to create a method of secondary research in order to find out the best bits of what audiences love about thrillers. From this we were able to identify the thriller audience as...
I believe that it was important that we did do our research on pre-existing thriller films because if we follow the basic conventions that make a movie a thriller or a good thriller we could attract a much bigger audience who are fans of the previous successful thriller films. We could then put our own ideas into the film but keep the original conventions making the thriller ours.
Target audience of thriller movies:
The target audience of the thriller is who we wanted specifically have watch our thriller movie, by creating a target audience for ourselves we have something to aim towards which increases the success rate of the thriller movies.
Our target audience:
Our thriller movie was aimed at the specific target audience of ting teenagers to young adults (16 - 24) and the preferred gender audience was for black males. The audience that is likely to watch my thriller would still be in education due to their ages so they would have heard or known people that have encountered or experienced either gangs or knife crime. Due to the fact that their age group lives in an era of gangs and knife crime, the news about knives and crime are very common in this day and age.
Conventions and emotions to attract our audience:
We used the convention of having younger aged characters (like Amani our 18 year old main character) in order to capture the emotions of our target audience because they can relate to the characters on the screen due to their age. We also captured the use of iconography to create a response to the younger audience by attaching items and incidents such as the use of the knife in the movie. Young teens have managed to form a darker relationship with knives over the years through knife crime. On the charts teens are the main culprits to use knives when committing murder or injury.
I believe that from thriller films the target audience enjoy the conventions of lighting. bright various flashing lights, as it easy way to engage viewers and get their attention because they have to focus on what's going on.

Questionnaire to attract ur audience:
We created a questionnaire in order to find out from the viewers that we were hoping to attract what they want to see in our thriller, from weapons to scenarios and characters. The importance of this was to find out specifically from the viewers what they want to see in a thriller film to give the people what they want to see and increase the success rate of the thriller.
What did I want to attract:
Our group wanted to attract the social group of you teens because they are the ones that said they happen to watch thriller movies and they was the most popular answer. It was also the boys that was the highest ranking to watch horror thrillers in their answers, so we needed to target them especially to watch the thriller hence the reason that Amani is the lead character of our horror movie (An 18 year old black boy.) It fits the results to our research.
Key Questions:
We created a questionnaire to find out what the people of today want to see in a horror film and then we tailored it to our own movie production in attempts to make the best modern thriller movie to date. After all the questionnaires where answered we tallied all the answers together and created bar charts of the results to understand what the majority want to see so we could deliver that to them.
We had asked key questions in our questionnaire that was a factor that changed the narrative we ended up creating.
"What plots do you like to see in the narrative?"
The changed the way our narrative came out because we got to find out what the viewers want to see in the storyline of the thriller.
Because the viewers had mostly answered the question by saying they like the time settings to be night time we knew that the viewers wanted to see a lot of dark imagines and scenery, hence the reason why we done the black out scene in a black room.
"How much blood do you like to see in your thriller?"
We needed to know how much blood the viewers want to see because this would give us an idea on how graphic they want the movie to be. Because we got a 50/50 as to if the viewers want a lot of blood or not we used a lot of blood but didn't add in a lot of graphic scenes.
"Do you mind the use of flashing lights in your thriller?"
This was important because the usage of flashing lights in thriller is seen as conventional but we needed to know if it is also what the viewers wanted to see. Because the viewers wanted to see this in thriller we could add in multiple flashing scenes and use bright filters on frames to make the blood and iconography stand out.
The use of open end questions in the questionnaire where beneficial because we got more tailored answers from the viewers which where more detailed as to what they want to see an example of this is "What plots do you like to see in the narrative." and "What sub-genre do you like to see in thrillers?" This was helpful because we got a personal answer as to what the viewers want to see.
(Results from questionnaire in graph form)
Overall, the primary research was important because we got to find out what the viewres wanted to see from us in the thriller we created This helped me attract and address my target audience because I used the questionnaire properly and changed my thriller based on it I could give the viewers wanted to see. If we give the viewers what they want to see my thriller would be more successful.
Audience feedback:
Once we had created our thriller, we decided to hold a focus group to get thoughts and feedback from our target audience. This was to ensure that we had attracted and addressed their needs.
Below are some images from our focus group:
Feedback from some of our audience members:
Diana age -17 (positive)
This feedback has allowed me to gain understanding that I have appealed to my target audience and reflected the genre because the way I captured the footage was beneficial.
Josh - age 16 (positive)
"The narrative was conventional to a thriller film as it was clear that a twist was going to occur. This makes the audience feel suspense as they are watching".
This is beneficial because I now know that the viewers can also see that I stuck to the conventions of a thriller which helps them to gain more enjoyment out of the thriller.
Jay - 18 (negative)
This feedback was helpful because it helps me to see the room for improvement in terms of lighting and how where I need to put more thought into the lighting to not confuse the viewers.
Jodie - 18 (negative)
This feedback helps me to realise what part of the narrative I could have better used me time doing and where I have lost the viewers attention mid-way through the thriller.

In terms of attracting my audience this made me feel that I done a good job in getting the viewers attention, however I could have best used my time in certain parts of the thriller (mid-way through the thriller)and there is room for improving conventions (such as lighting.)
